#DUK 11"x11" Chinese Rank Badge, silk Kesi (Ko-ssu) tapestry weave from the front of a robe, China, 19thC, highlighted with silk wrapped in gold thread and enhanced with paint, it is woven in two pieces so the robe could be opened from the front, the red cap on the head identifies the bird as a crane, the 1st rank of civil service, generally in very good condition and fine work, larger photo $1100.00
#9763 12"x11" Chinese Rank Badge, silk Kesi (Ko-ssu) tapestry weave from the back of a robe, China, 19thC, highlighted with silk wrapped in gold thread and enhanced with paint, most likely a mandarin duck, the 7th rank of civil service, badges with the red sun on the right side of the badge would have been worn by the spouse of the dignitary, some brown oxidation and frayed edges, larger photos $450.00
#3144 12"x12" Chinese Rank badge from the front of a robe, woven in two pieces so that the robe could be opened from the front, 1st Qtr 20thC, very fine metal couching on silk, the two long tail feathers with a single spot identify this bird as a Paradise Flycatcher, the 9th rank of civil service, although the work is fine, and the owner would have been proud to wear it, the work is not a difficult as Kossu tapestry, but men in the lowest rank would not have been able, necessarily, to afford the finer work, also, it may have been more appropriate for someone in the 9th rank to have a badge of this type, showing humility, and not trying to overstep his position, very good condition, framed, larger photo $395.00 wpe13.jpg (11554 bytes)
