Here is an excerpt from "Outlines of Chinese Symbolism" by C A S Williams. "Liu Hai, a Minister of State of the 10th century AD, was a proficient student of Taoist magic. He was said to possess a specimen of the mystical three-legged toad, which would convey him to any place he wished to go. Occasionally the creature would escape down the nearest well, but Liu Hai had no difficulty in fishing it out by means of a line baited with gold coins, He is popularly represented with one foot resting on the toad, and holding in his hand a waving ribbon upon which five gold coins are strung. This design is known as Liu Hai sporting with the toad, and is regarded as most auspicious and conducive to good fortune, the three-legged toad being also considered to be the symbol of money-making."
