| #9060 | 11.5"x13" | A large piece of Tohono O'odham Indians pottery (Papago Indians pottery), Southern Arizona, ca. mid 20thC, a hand coiled water jar with two lugs with pinched appliqué, the red on buff painting is done with red mineral paints, probably crushed hematite, and sprinkled with golden mica, black fire clouds are visible from being fired in a pit and not a kiln, The Tohono O'odham are mostly famous for their basketry, and the image on the pot gives homage to that tradition, the spiky plants are yucca, and the seed pods are devil's claw pods, these are the two most important materials used in their basket making, we also see two finished and decorated baskets on each side, the Tohono O'odham inherited their red on buff tradition from the Hohokham who once occupied the same area and may be there ancestors, one small chip to the rim, general good condition, larger photos | $650.00 |
